The Democratic-led U.S. House on Thursday approved a resolution written by U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Holly, that calls for President Donald Trump to get congressional approval before engaging in any long-term military actions against Iran. The vote was 224-194 with most Democrats in support and most Republicans in opposition. The resolution doesn't have the force of law but expresses the sense of the House with tensions between the U.S. and Iran running high. Last week, Trump authorized a drone strike that killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani. Iran this week fired missiles into bases used by U.S. and partner forces in Iraq in apparent retaliation, though the president said there were no casualties. Among Michigan's members of the U.S. House, eight voted for it — including Slotkin, Levin and Kildee, as well as Democratic U.S. Reps. Debbie Dingell of Dearborn, Brenda Lawrence of Southfield, Haley Stevens of Rochester Hills, Rashida Tlaib of Detroit, and independent U.S. Rep. Justin Amash of Cascade Township. Voting against it were six Republicans: U.S. Reps. Jack Bergman of Watersmeet, Paul Mitchell of Dryden, John Moolenaar of Midland, and Fred Upton of St. Joseph as well Huizenga and Walberg.
