Lawrence torches Trump for ‘lynching’ remark
President Donald Trump on Tuesday morning again took to Twitter to blast the impeachment inquiry against him — and this time he deployed a term synonymous with racial hate crimes. Trump tweeted, “All Republicans must remember what they are witnessing here – a lynching. But we will WIN!” The president was criticized by many, including the only African American member of Michigan’s congressional delegation, U.S. Rep. Brenda Lawrence (D-Southfield). “Again, this President has demonstrated a lack of respect for the suffering of Black America,” she said in a statement. “The fact that he would describe the power given to this Congress by Article II of the U.S. Constitution as a lynching is disgusting, insensitive and terrifying. This statement is absolutely offensive. I implore President Trump to remove his disgraceful tweet and refrain from minimizing the suffering of my ancestors.”
