Congresswoman Brenda L. Lawrence introduces House Resolution to Enforce Existing Gun Laws

House Resolution urges application of all resources needed to enforce current federal firearms laws.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Brenda Lawrence (MI-14) today introduced a resolution on the House floor urging the enforcement of existing federal firearms laws and that all appropriate resources be allocated to ensure that the flood of unlawfully purchased firearms into our communities ends.

“It is critical that Congress acts now to make our communities safer and to ensure that Americans’ Second Amendment rights are protected by enforcing existing laws and focusing on responsible gun ownership measures,” Congresswoman Lawrence said Thursday. “Americans, and gun owners, overwhelmingly support enforcement of current federal laws, including background checks to keep felons, domestic abusers, fugitives from justice, and other dangerous people from purchasing firearms.”

According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, more than 31,000 men, women, and children die each year from gunshot wounds in the United States.

Since enactment of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act on February 28, 1994, background checks have stopped more than 2.1 million gun sales to prohibited individuals. Despite the successes of the Brady Act, unlawfully purchased firearms are traced to approximately 400,000 gun crimes each year and an estimated 30,000 guns that are “lost” from firearms dealer’s inventories. The estimated number of lost firearms is based on reported losses and government agency spot checks of U.S. firearms dealers.

Two recent surveys, conducted by Johns Hopkins and the Pew Research Center, show more than 80 percent of gun owners favor universal background checks.

“The wide ranging impact of gun violence is real and the consequences are far too great to ignore” Rep. Lawrence added. “While there are numerous, common sense solutions to stemming gun violence, it is clear that one of the steps we must take is to rigorously enforce the laws that are already in place. My resolution would ensure that occurs, in accordance with the wishes of the vast majority of Americans.”
