Congresswoman Lawrence Sends Letter to DHS on ICE Raids in Michigan
Washington, D.C.- On June 15, 2017, Congresswoman Brenda L. Lawrence sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security Secretary, John Kelly, in response to the Immigration and Custom Enforcement raids that detained a number of Iraqi nationals, including Chaldeans and Muslims:
“The recent ICE operations have incited fear and sent shockwaves among the immigrant community in Detroit and throughout the state of Michigan.
“I have sent this letter in order to receive clarity on the rationale and methods used for targeting individuals with final orders especially if some of these orders appear to be decades old and do not reflect the current conditions in the countries of origin.
“These raids have a significant impact on our communities and the potential for great harm to those who may be forced to return to life-threatening environments. Many of the individuals detained are those whom the United States Government in 2016 acknowledged were targets of genocide.
“The increase in the enforcement of removal orders during this administration has concerned the community and brought into question whether these actions protect public safety and the human rights of the people in this District, including immigrants and foreign nationals. I hope to receive a quick and thorough response from DHS Secretary Kelly.”
