Congresswoman Lawrence Statement on Deportation Stay Ruling of Iraqi Nationals

June 27, 2017
Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Brenda L. Lawrence (MI-14) issued the following statement in response to Detroit federal judge Mark Goldsmith’s decision to issue a temporary nationwide stay to halt deportation of all Iraqi nationals with final orders for removal:

“Following recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Michigan arresting over 100 Iraqi nationals, I am encouraged by the recent court ruling which puts a temporary freeze on this deportation order nationwide.  I, along with many immigrant advocates including the ACLU have voiced concerns of deportation of those who may be forced to return to a life threatening environment.  The court’s decision allows for more time for individuals to seek legal help to challenge deportation orders to Iraq where they could face persecution, torture, and even death.”
