Congresswoman Lawrence Statement on Human Trafficking Awareness Day
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Brenda Lawrence (MI-14), on this Human Trafficking Awareness Day, released the following statement calling for heighted awareness, education and action to combat this abuse that continues to plague our nation:
“Human trafficking is a modern form of slavery that exists throughout the United States and continues to deprive people of their human rights and dignity.
“This is a problem that persists in our neighborhoods and communities impacting thousands of Americans, a majority of whom are women and girls.
“In 2017, a total of 4,460 cases were reported and 13,897 calls were made to the National Human Trafficking Hotline.136 of these human trafficking cases occurred in my home state of Michigan.
“Traffickers use a range of options to control their victims, including: physical abuse, rape, drugs, and emotional abuse to name a few. More awareness and education is needed to tackle this problem wherever it exists. We simply cannot accept this as a new norm in our country. Together, we must do all we can to fight for the rights and safety of women, girls and all victims of this atrocious abuse.
We must insist on dignity, we must insist on justice, and we must insist on protecting the most basic rights of freedom for all.”
