Rep. Brenda Lawrence Signs Bipartisan Discharge Petition to Force a Vote to Protect Dreamers
Washington, D.C. – Rep. Brenda Lawrence signed a bipartisan discharge petition to force a long-overdue vote on the House Floor to protect America’s Dreamers.
“In September 2017, President Trump decided to end the DACA program, a reckless action that has received little public support and created an unnecessary crisis. I am proud to take real bipartisan action to get the American people a vote on legislation that would finally ensure protection for America’s Dreamers and the peace of mind to continue pursuing the American Dream.”
The American people want Congress to pass a DREAM Act, as do the business, religious, and law enforcement communities:
- 84 percent of Americans support a path to citizenship for Dreamers or permanent status;
- 88 percent of Independents back a path to citizenship or permanent status;
- 70 percent of Republicans back either citizenship or permanent status.
This discharge petition would force a House vote on bills to protect Dreamers. The proposal receiving the most votes on the Floor would be adopted, under a “queen-of-the-hill” procedure.
