Rep. Brenda Lawrence Statement on President Trump’s Decision to Withdraw from the Iran Nuclear Agreement

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Lawrence issued the following statement on President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Iran Nuclear Agreement:

“President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) will not only undermine the national security of the United States, but will damage our credibility as international partners, and embolden the deal’s hardline opponents including the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

“The JCPOA allowed the United States and its international partners to impose unparalleled scrutiny on Iran’s nuclear program and significantly reduce the danger of a nuclear arms race. As we await international responses to the U.S. withdrawal, there is no doubt in my mind that that the current Administration has deliberately chosen to weaken our credibility and diplomacy in a way that will be difficult to repair. As a member of Congress, I will continue to fight for the safety and diplomacy of our great country.”
