Rep. Lawrence Leads Group of Democratic House Members in push for Robust Water Funding and National Moratorium on Water Shutoffs Amid COVID-19
Washington, D.C.- Today, Rep. Brenda L. Lawrence (MI-14), led over 75 Congressional House Members in sending a letter to Congressional Leadership requesting that Congress prioritize water infrastructure funding to local water providers and provide assistance to ensure that no American goes without water service due to an inability to pay during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As the Coronavirus pandemic continues to spread, handwashing is our first line of defense. Until every single person, family, and community in this country is guaranteed access to safe, clean, affordable running water this crisis will severely worsen,” said Rep. Lawrence.
“In the city of Detroit, which has over 190 coronavirus-related deaths, more than 140,000 households have had their water service disconnected since 2014; this is simply unacceptable. That’s why I, and so many of my colleagues in Congress, am urging Congressional Leadership to finally invest in fixing our long-neglected water system and ensure that those most in need receive such services,” continued Rep. Lawrence. “The time is now.”
