U.S. Rep. Lawrence, Thirty Year Postal Service Veteran, Calls on Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to Resign During Postal Day of Action
Southfield, MI- Today, U.S. Representative Brenda L. Lawrence (MI-14), who held various roles in the United States Postal Service prior to serving in Congress, hosted a press conference along with U.S. Reps. Rashida Tlaib (MI-13), Dan Kildee (MI-05) and Haley Stevens (MI-11) in response to the ongoing turmoil caused by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy:
“In June, Republican mega-donor Louis DeJoy was named the next Postmaster General (PMG) of the United States Postal Service (USPS), even though he has no experience working at the agency. Within weeks, new initiatives and radical policy changes that he has implemented have crippled the more than 600,000 Postal Service employees’ ability to promptly deliver mail, as millions of Americans are experiencing mail delays or not receiving mail at all. Amid a global pandemic, any efforts to undermine the Postal Service’s ability to deliver crucial medical supplies, economic impact payments, and ballots is unconscionable,” said Rep. Lawrence.
"Under the guise of “cost cutting,” these measures are nothing more than a façade for President Trump and his administration’s continued effort to attack USPS, undermine our democracy, and restrict Americans’ ability to safely vote-by-mail in the upcoming election,” stated Rep. Lawrence. “It appears that every time President Trump tweets or attacks vote-by-mail, PMG DeJoy issues a new directive aimed at making the president’s fantasies a reality. Instead of fulfilling his obligation to protect the integrity and independence of USPS, PMG DeJoy is acquiescing to President Trump’s perverse whims and aiding in the disparagement of a respected government service that has reliably delivered mail for more than two centuries.”
“It only took two months for the American people to see PMG DeJoy’s true intentions; sadly, he has quickly shown that he is nothing more than an ineffective and truly unqualified leader who only cares about satisfying President Trump’s wishes to undermine the Postal Service’s ability to deliver ballots and sabotage the upcoming election,” said Rep. Lawrence. “A partisan hack unwilling to respect USPS’s mission does not deserve to lead the more than half a million dedicated employees who work tirelessly every day to deliver mail to all Americans. The American people deserve a Postmaster General who understands the significance of the postal system, not a businessman who falsely equates a government service with a private business looking at a bottom line. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy must resign immediately. If he is not willing to do so, the Chairman of the USPS Board of Governors must immediately act to remove him. Our democracy will always come first.”
