Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence

Representing the 14th District of Michigan

13th Amendment Anniversary Ceremony

December 10, 2015

On December 9th, the United States Congress held a ceremony to commemorate the ratification of the 13th Amendment in Emancipation Hall at the U.S. Capitol.

The 13th Amendment to the Constitution abolished slavery in America 150 years ago, making our nation the true home of the free and the brave. I and my esteemed colleagues were joined by President Obama as we paid tribute to those who fought for freedom and who made it possible for me and my fellow colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus to serve as Congressional Representatives.

Let us never forget the lessons of our past and the sacrifices that were made in order for us to live today in a free nation. Let us always work to improve our nation and protection of those freedoms for all citizens, regardless of their religion, nationality, and race.
