Event organizers contend sending the majority-Chaldean detainees to Iraq will put them in jeopardy of genocide by ISIS for being Christians.

“We haven’t made a decision yet,” said Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Cedric Richmond (D-La.) on Capitol Hill on June 16. Rep. Richmond was referring to the latest attempt by Donald Trump to meet with the CBC. The CBC hasn’t had a formal opportunity to discuss a second meeting with Trump.

Advocates for Chaldean Christians detained by federal immigration enforcement are in a race against time to halt their deportation back to war-torn Iraq. Beginning last Sunday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested dozens of Chaldean Christians in the Detroit metropolitan area, and most were quickly sent to detention at the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown, Ohio.

Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence, D-Southfield, will be holding a town hall meeting Monday night in Ferndale. Communications Director Nicole Julius said this will be a general town hall and that attendees will get to ask questions of their choosing on any topic. “Attendees do not need to submit questions prior to the event,” said Julius. “They can arrive with their questions.”

On Monday June 12, dozens gathered outside the Mother of God Chaldean Catholic Church in Southfield to protest a recent wave of ICE raids that targeted, captured and detained dozens of Iraqi immigrants at multiple locations across Metro Detroit, including local churches, homes and even a hospital.

One of the 114 Iraqi immigrants arrested in Michigan on Sunday has been granted temporary relief and can stay in the U.S. until at least Aug. 10, his attorney said. Haydar Butris, 38, of Sterling Heights, was detained by federal immigration agents as   part of a sweep of Iraqi nationals with criminal records. They were part of almost 200 Iraqi nationals arrested by U.S.
